Episode 191: Goal Blocks

There are many reasons why people aren't able to move forwards in life to a successful future and it's good to have a look at them to see if we need to make some changes in how we progress ourselves.

Firstly we have our past.
Unfortunately the past is the only place our brain has when it creates expectations of the future.
Because of this we can go round in circles making the same mistakes and not taking any steps at all. Especially if we ruminate over the misjudgements and unfair treatments that still hurt because we're caught up in the emotional content of what happened. Which leads us onto the next thing.

Blaming others.
Having an external locus of control means we can't take as much responsibility over where our lives are going because we feel that there's always an external influence preventing our success.
If there's no point in applying for that promotion because the bosses niece is probably going to get the job anyway, then we get stuck.
Yet WE made that happen, not the boss or their niece, WE did that. But it's a handy defense mechanism. If you can transfer the responsibility to someone else, it can't damage our ego when we don't progress.

Similarly another thing that gets in the way of us progressing is other peoples opinions. Sometimes we dont get started because other people get in our way.
Trying to control others thoughts about us is not only as close to impossible as you can get but prevents a normal, natural life of disagreements that lead to learning and wisdom. People are always going to have opinions. It doesn't mean they're right, but they should be allowed to think what they want. What someone thinks of you, is none of your business and if you can think of it that way then it doesn't make any sense to let it have an effect on you does it?
Easier said than done I know, but you've got to start somewhere and challenging these things is important. It creates new habits that overide old ones until they way we want to be feels natural to us. It just takes discipline and patience.

For things to change in your life, YOU have to change first. And we do change when we give ourselves a bit of a nudge in the right direction. You might just need to pull yourself to one side ever so slightly, and over time you'll be surprised how different you are.

So if you have a goal in mind ask yourself this. "What is the first step you need to take in order to get the end result?" And when you know what that first step is, no matter how small a step it is, take that step and then ask yourself this. "What's the next step?" Then keep on going until you get there with discipline and patience.

Then you'll look back and see how far you've come.
